The story of Dianira Kelemen and Elijah Davis . The sequel to Falling (make sure you read that first)
Prologue[]
She was in the trees, watching two people sitting by the lake. The soft light from the moon made their silhouettes visible to her, but only their silhouettes. No matter how hard she peered into the darkness, she couldn’t make out the identities of the two.
A laugh rang out from the girl, and the boy put his arm around her. They acted as if this was natural, as if they did this all the time. The girl in the trees had a burning curiosity; she wanted to know who these were. They looked so familiar, but she couldn’t put her finger on it; it slipped from her mind each time.
The boy leaned in for a kiss, and the light revealed more of his face. Eager to see, the girl in the woods took a step forward, but her foot stepped on a branch, and a loud crack echoed through the still night air. The whispers from the couple stopped abruptly. The boy’s head whipped around, as did the girl’s, and the figure in the woods retreated into the shadows.
“What is it?” asked the girl to the boy, scanning the trees. “Do you see anything?” her whisper louder than before.
“I don’t know,” replied the boy.
“What if it was someone? What if they saw us? Uhggh! If they so much as whisper a word of this, I will personally see to it that they never speak again.”
The boy turned back to the girl and gathered her in his arms. “I’m sure it was nothing.” The girl’s eyes still scanned the trees, but she soon turned to the boy, letting him distract her from her worries.
The girl in the woods backed away quickly, for she had seen enough. When the boy had turned around, the light had revealed his identity.
The girl woke with a start. It’s just a dream, she thought. However, it was the same dream that she had been having for the past week and a half. She glanced up at a bunk across the cabin where her brother should lie. Curiosity winning over, she strode over to it and peered at its empty covers. She was not very surprised, and she didn’t know why. She walked out of the cabin, grabbing her jacket as she went, already knowing what she would find. Yet, little did she know that more than one identity would be revealed that night.
